If you've spent any time on Twitter the past few years like me, you've seen it:

Someone tweets breaking news about geopolitics, economics, or some other dense topic, and the replies flood in with "explain in football terms."

It has become the internet's go-to when reality gets too complicated. Someone always steps up with an explanation using Premier League drama or NBA trades.

Google just made this automatic.

Their new research experiment, Learn Your Way, takes any PDF textbook and rewrites it based on your interests: football, music, food, whatever clicks for you.

If you want to understand data structures through football, or neural networks explained via cooking, this tool rebuilds the entire textbook: explanations, diagrams, quizzes, and even the narrative flow.

It also transforms that content into five different learning formats you can switch between on the fly.

Let's break it down. But before that, catch up on AI this week:

News News News:

TOOLS that caught my attention

A web-based, AI-driven chart generator that turns your data (CSV, Excel, JSON) into professional visualizations like bar, line, pie, heatmap, and more in seconds

An AI-powered video generator that lets you turn simple text prompts or photos into high-quality, watermark-free videos in minutes using trending templates and animation styles, ideal for social media, marketing, or creative projects without any editing skills.

AI-powered contract, proposal, and invoice builder for freelancers that generates legally sound documents from a simple project description, handles client signatures, and manages payments.

The five learning formats

Learn Your Way is powered by LearnLM, Google's pedagogy-focused AI model integrated into Gemini 3 Pro. Upload one pdf and what it generates is as follows:

1. Immersive Text with embedded quizzes

The tool breaks long chapters into digestible chunks, adds AI-generated illustrations, and drops interactive questions throughout.

Orange question mark tabs appear mid-paragraph. On clicking them, you get a pop quiz on what you just read, with instant feedback.

The personalization layer means generic examples get swapped.

2. Slides with narration (lecture-style videos)

The AI converts your PDF into a narrated slideshow that plays like a recorded lecture. it's a conversational summary with visual examples tailored to your chosen interest.

One tester noted: "I've generated a bunch of Video Overviews in NotebookLM, and this was way more in-depth. It felt like a full lesson I'd find on YouTube, not just a summary."

3. Audio lessons (teacher-student dialogue)

Think NotebookLM's podcast feature, but educational.

Instead of two hosts chatting about your sources, Learn Your Way creates a dialogue between an AI teacher and AI student.

They work through the material together, with the student asking questions a real learner would have and the teacher addressing common misconceptions.

Visuals accompany the audio, outline-style flowcharts highlighting keywords and concepts as the conversation unfolds.

4. Mind maps (hierarchical knowledge visualization)

Interactive mind maps that start with the main concept on the left and branch out into subtopics.

This is useful for complex subjects where you need to see the big picture before diving into specifics.

The mind map is personalized to your reading level and uses your interest-based examples throughout.

5. Section-level quizzes with adaptive feedback

Standalone quizzes for each section that adapt based on your responses.

Get something wrong and the tool doesn't marks it incorrect and explains why, points you back to the relevant section, and adjusts future questions to reinforce weak areas.

How it works

Before generating those five formats, Learn Your Way runs a two-step transformation:

Step 1: Re-level to your grade

You select your grade level (middle school, high school, college). The AI rewrites the text to match that reading level while preserving the content scope.

Step 2: Inject interest-based examples

You pick an interest: sports, music, food, or (eventually) anything custom. The system strategically replaces generic examples with personalized ones.

This personalized text becomes the foundation for all five formats because the examples propagate through slides, audio lessons, mind maps, and quizzes.

Try it yourself

Currently, 16 demos are live on their site and have have preset combinations like "middle schooler who likes food" or "high schooler who likes football."

You can explore them without signing up.

The full version (waitlist-only right now) will eventually let you upload your own PDFs and set custom interests.

PS: This is a research experiment. It does not have an API or LMS integration yet because Google Labs is testing what works before deciding to open it up for all.

My take

I am a big fan of multimodal transformation.

Switching between text, slides, audio, and mind maps for the same concept does help retention [validated in Google's study of 60 students, 11% better recall after 3-5 days.]

Explaining data structures through football stat tracking makes abstract concepts click for the right learner.

This solves a real problem: textbooks are one-size-fits-all by necessity, but brains aren't.

Bottom line:

If subsequent research confirms the 11% retention gain holds across more contexts, and Google adds teacher controls, deeper personalization and independent validation, this could reshape how students engage with learning materials.

For now, the tool does one thing well: it proves that AI can transform static textbooks into something more engaging and personalized.

Whether it can do that at scale, with accuracy, in real classrooms and with teacher oversight? That's the next chapter. Keep an eye out.

Until next time,
